Many tourist destinations nowadays are too focused on one thing. One place might have a beautiful beach, but that’s it. If you’re getting tired of this trend and want something different, then Richmond Virginia should be the place for your next vacation. Richmond is a well-rounded destination with its rich history pertaining to the American Civil War, recreational parks for having fun with the family, and great and exciting new flavors in their food and drink. Discover thrilling experiences every corner you turn. Here are some of our favourite things to do in Richmond, Virginia.
GeoCaching
Geo what now? GeoCaching may be an unfamiliar term to most of you. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. GeoCaching can be compared to an outdoor treasure hunt where the only things you’ll have to rely on are your smarts and a GPS. It started gaining popularity around the early 2000s. You are tasked to uncover the locations of hidden caches that are strategically placed all around the city. There are over a thousand of these in Richmond, and more than nine thousand all over Virginia. Be prepared to go high and low and look left and right for these hidden objects. The contents of the caches are yours to keep. You never know what you’ll find – curious trinkets, various tools, perhaps even gems. How does one participate in this treasure hunt, you ask? All you need to do is to sign up for it. You’ll be given a treasure map then you’re good to go.
RVA Trolley
Take a trip back in time with the RVA Trolley. This red Chance from the 1920s packs a 24-seater and brings its passengers across Richmond, passing through historical sites and beautiful landmarks. Feel free to take pictures of the well-known places you come across in the city. Some of the places included in the tour are the Poe Museum, Canal Walk, Maggie Walker House, and the Historic Monument Avenue. The RVA Trolley also offers a Craft Brewery Tour wherein they’ll take you to the best breweries Virginia has to offer. You’ll be able to sample their beers and buy some souvenirs along the way.
Museum of the Confederacy
What city would be complete without its very own museum? The Museum of Confederacy is open to everyone, and those who are curious about Richmond’s past involving the confederacy in the civil war are definitely in for a treat. Personal items from confederate generals like Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson are there for you to see, as well as an assortment of artifacts found from the civil war. One collection worth mentioning amongst others is the Eleanor S. Brockenbrough Archives named as such because of the sheer extent of her contribution to the archives. That includes two hundred manuscripts, over a thousand prints, and more than fifteen thousand books and pamphlets. It even includes the draft of Robert E. Lee’s blood-stained resignation letter. Those who want to discover and learn by walking at their own pace are free to do so, but there are guided tours also being offered.
