You would be amazed at the difference in costs in some cities as to doing an activity in off peak compared to on peak. The great thing is there are less crowds and you usually get treated better as they aren't getting as much business, therefore they treat you that little bit nicer.
Sometimes you may have to brave colder weather in Europe for example, to travel in off season but it can definitely be worth it. Just think, the money you save can go towards your next trip or extending the trip you're already on!
The touristy day trips can be great but they can also be a big hit to your wallet. The other bad thing about them is you get herded around, getting told where you're going and if you happen to meet someone or want to see something for a bit longer you can't, and you have to stay with your group.
Of course they are convenient, but that's why you pay the price for! As a budget traveler you have to be constantly on the lookout for the cheaper way of doing things.
So instead of taking all those touristy trips look at the ones that you know you just have to visit. Do them and try to restrict yourself to just one or two per country, on the other days, don't think that you must do every day trip because the brochure made them look amazing.
Use your imagination and think about how you could experience the same thing for less. Could you get the same view from a cheaper stand point? Could you make your own way around (on a scooter maybe?)
Could a group of you hire your own driver to take you to see what you want to see?
Just going for a walk around a city can be an amazing experience in itself. You can see all the different architecture, cafes and people watch all day, and it's free! Use your feet they are free.
What about hiking trails? Pack your own lunch and you've got a great day ahead of you.
Some of the best days will be when you don't spend money on the tourist trips and do things your own way. Try it, I promise you'll enjoy it.
