· Avoid bringing unnecessary documents.Don’t bring your entire portfolio when going on a vacation particularly on an overseas destination. The only proof of identification you need is your passport. You could also bring additional ID such as your driver’s license or SSS just in case airport authority will ask one. There are some travelers who has a bad habit of bringing their birth certificates and educational credentials which is totally needless. Imagine if you lost your baggage filled with your personal information to the wrong hands.
· Bring plenty of cash to elude using debit cards or credit cards. Thieves have now gone digital. Their greediness inspired them to develop a skimming device that allows credit card and debit card information to be copied without your knowledge. You have no idea that someone is already using your details to purchase something somewhere. One day you’ll be surprised to receive a call from your bank due to questionable transactions reaching up to thousands of dollars. If you must withdraw, do it on ATM machines that are located within the vicinity of the bank itself. Avoid taking cash from machines located at malls or even at the lobby of your hotel.
· Invest on your own portable WiFi. Social media is your life and you’re always been itching to upload your selfie on the plane once you landed which it is tempting to use free public WiFi connections. Be cautious when connecting to unsecure free WiFi internet connections even if it’s from a world renowned café and patisserie in Paris. Some airports offer a computer where you can log in to check your email. Be sure to log out and wipe all the cookies after using it.
· Keep your smartphone secure. Most people have a bad habit of storing every bits of information in their mobile phones. Nowadays, tangible planners are no longer useful since you can just download an application to replace that bulky notebook. Another bad habit that all of us are guilty of is keeping our emails and social media accounts logged in 24/7. The worst part is if your phone got stolen without a passcode.
· Protect your child against identity theft. Children are also a victim of identity theft. Culprits are using children’s identity for claiming benefits from the government or opening a credit card extension from your account. The best way to avoid identity theft to your kid is by getting him or her a passport. This will lessen the need for bringing other documents like birth certificates or even baptismal certificate as a proof of identification.
