In case you can’t seem to decide for your travel agenda this year, why not make your travelling a more historical approach? The Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi or the Eye of London might be thrilling, but visiting sites that are considered to be a wonder is something to look forward to. Take a look at the Seven Wonders of the Modern World while they are existing.
Channel Tunnel, Europe. This site was chosen by the American Society of Civil Engineers to become part of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. It is the greatest proof about humans’ ability to build complex engineering marvels. The Channel Tunnel consists of three tunnels, two tunnels carry trains and a smaller middle tunnel is used as a service tunnel. It was opened in 1994 under the English Channel that connects Folkestone in the United Kingdom with Coquelles in France. It is 31.37 miles long, and 24 of those miles are located under water.
CN Tower, Canada. The CN tower is the third largest tower in the world standing up to 553.3 meters high. Located in Toronto, it is a telecommunications tower that was built by Canadian National Railways in 1976. At present, the CN tower is federally owned and managed by Canada Lands Company.
Empire State Building, New York City. The Empire State Building opened on May 1, 1931 and during that time it’s the tallest building in the world rising up to 1,250 feet tall. The engineering and construction process during that time isn’t as modern as today. That is why despite the fact that there are plenty of high-rises that are taller than the Empire State Building, the latter will continuously become an icon not only for New York, but for the entire America.
Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco. Another wonder of the modern world that came from America. It is the world’s longest bridge that connects San Francisco to its north. Golden Gate Bridge is 1.7 miles long and about 41 million passengers are made across the bridge each year. Prior to the completion of the bridge, people’s only mode of transportation across the San Francisco Bay was ferry.
Itaipu Dam. Completed back in 1984, Itaipu Dam is the world’s largest operating hydroelectric facility supplying Paraguay with more than 90% of its electric needs. The enormous dam is located on the border of Brazil and Paraguay. It is nearly a five mile long that impounds the Parana River and creates a 110 mile-long ItaipuResrvoir.
Netherlands North Sea Protection Works. Netherlands created new land from the North Sea using dikes and other barriers to the ocean. From 1927 to 1932, the 19 mile long the (the Closing Dike) was built transforming Zuidezee sea into a freshwater lake.
The Panama Canal. Panama Canal is a 48 mile-long international water way that allows ships to pass between the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. It was built from 1904 to 1914 and was once a territory of the United States.
