I’m a firm believer in not spending the majority of your travel budget on a hotel. After all, the whole point of travel is to see the city, not spend the day in your hotel. When it comes to booking hotels, I ask myself the following questions:
Is it clean? This is a big one for me. I don’t do roaches or bed bugs so if a hotel has either of those, it’s a no go for me and it should be for you as well.
Is it located in the city center? If you have to travel more than 30 minutes to get to tourist attractions, look for another hotel. The amount of money you save on the hotel you will end up spending on transportation and wasted time getting into the city every day.
Does it have good, recent reviews? I love a good deal, but I won’t sacrifice cleanliness, travel time, or safety to save a buck. Before I book any hotel, hostel or vacation rental I read reviews. And not just any reviews, recent reviews (within the past 3 months).
Most guidelines for reviews are simple. The location must have a minimum of 500 reviews, with at least 10 reviews from the past 3 months, and have a score of at least 80% of higher. For reviews, it is always best to check websites like Trip Advisor and Yelp.
Also, make it a point to do a general search on Google and YouTube with the following phrases “ACME Hotel Reviews,” “ACME Hotel Roaches,” “ACME Hotel Bed Bugs.” This will pull up any articles, blog posts, or YouTube videos from anyone who has ever stayed in this hotel.
Since we live in a cell phone driven society, you can usually find a video walkthrough on YouTube so that you know exactly what you’re getting when you book. When looking at reviews on Trip Advisor pay close attention to traveler photos.
Hotels will be sure to only display their property in the best light. Travel photos will always tell the truth so those should carry more weight when making your decision.
